Greater Mapungubwe

Location & Map

The Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area measures 5 909 km2 and is situated at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe Rivers, encompassing areas in three countries - Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The TFCA includes Botswana's Northern Tuli Game Reserve; South Africa's Mapungubwe National Park and various privately owned ranches, and Zimbabwe's Tuli Circle Safari Area, Sentinel Ranch, Nottingham Estate, Maramani Communal Land and the Machachuta, Masera and River Ranch Resettlement Areas.

The selection of the Limpopo/Shashe area is based on the rich biodiversity of the area, its scenic beauty and the cultural importance of the archaeological treasures of Mapungubwe. The area supports populations of big game, including the famous Tuli elephant, all major predators, and offers potential for the development of a viable, consumptive and non-consumptive tourism industry.
